July 30, 2007 will remain a
very special day in my memory. One of a string of unusually hot,
humid days that would mark the worst drought in recent Ohio history, a
drought that would extend all the way into the middle of October, this
Monday marked the day when I'd have a chance to meet one of the most
impressive figures in angling. Steve Rajeff learned to cast at the
Golden Gate Casting Club in San Francisco in the late 1960's. A
precocious talent, he won his first fly casting tournament shortly
thereafter and has gone on to win more than 36 National and World titles
since. Shortly after this interview Steve set a new national record
in Men's 2-Handed Revolving Spool Distance with a stunning 367-foot cast.
It was no cake walk - the competition was stiff and long-range
sharpshooters like Henry Mittel and Harvey Beck kept the pressure on.
But at the end of the week Rajeff would place first in eight of twelve
Grand All Around events, capture the Jon Tarantino Memorial Award for Fly
Casting and the Myron Gregory Memorial Award for Plug Casting. Steve
was generous enough to put time aside for a virtually unknown on-line
magazine and we managed to capture a few of those minutes on tape for a
very special edition of the Adventures in Fly Tying video podcast series.
