Jim Stuard's Comments:
Simply put,
St. Croix has got it going on. They do an awesome job with the packaging
of their gear. The natural, Birdseye maple reel seat is one of my
favorites in the shootout. The old saying goes that if it looks right, it
IS right applies here. Hands down, this was my favorite rod in the
competition. It didn’t feel like a true 2wt, like the shorter rods but it
still maintained a level of ‘feel’ that was commensurate with a rod at
this finish level and price. Probably the best caster in the shootout. I
was nailing 50’ casts and hooking fish with a 3wt line that would have
been impossible with some of the other rods. This is about as close as you
can get to the definition of the balance between versatility and intent.

Joe Cornwall's Comments:
This rod feels heavier in the hand than
expected, but no more so than a similar glass rod. I love the
bird's-eye maple insert and noted that the BP UL reel was just slightly
light for this rod, so look for a match in a reel of 3.5 to 4-ounces
loaded. My casting notes emphasize that this rod is accurate; I
wrote that several times. The blank tracks as true as any, and I
found the ability to drop a dry fly on a target the size of a saucer to be
very addictive. I went on to note; " This rod is so smooth you'd
think it's made of ice cream! No hinge point, a really great casting rod
that reacts to the gentlest of touch. Versatile, competent and
confident." I could live with this rod and not think I'm missing
anything. It's good with both a 2wt and a 3wt and it's pretty
without being gaudy. This is a superb general purpose ultra-light
fly rod.

Jeremy Kurtz's Comments:
The Legend Ultra's have been around for a few
years now, and have a good following. This rod doesn't disappoint. It's a
mid-flex rod that casts well in close with excellent control and accuracy
out to 45 feet. You can get more distance with a double haul if needed.
Good quality Super grade cork, and a nice up-locking reel seat with a
figured maple insert. The tip top on this rod could have been
mounted better, especially at this price point. Silky smooth performance,
and excellent feel overall. Good sensitivity even with smaller fish. This
rod is a clear winner, and my favorite rod in this shoot out.

Paul Feldman's Comments:
You can tell at first glance that this is a
quality rod. The grip was high quality cork and it has a beautiful maple
burl reel seat. Short in casting and accuracy was great, and the rod was
very capable of throwing a long line. For extra distance it handled a
double haul very well. I liked this rod very much.
